Hermit Crab Supplies

The land hermit crabs will make an excellent pet for almost every one, no matter the age. One of the great features of this exotic pet is the very limited amount of time you will have to spend taking care of the crab after you have the hermit crab cage set up. This little pet is not like the dogs and cats that need a bath or need to be walked. No worries about the fur all over the furniture and your clothes either. This make a great pet for the people that are allergic to the pet furs also.

With very limited need of just a few hermit crab supplies it is a very inexpensive pet to keep. The best place to purchase a land hermit crab is in a pet store, but it is also possible to find them for free if you can walk along the beaches. Some of the souvenir shops along the beach will also have hermit crabs for sell. Most of the time they will be sold in a small, plastic carrying case. Please do not use this case as the final home for your new friend. And if you can, please try to purchase or find more then just one crab. The term hermit crab is way off base because the crabs really travel in packs. Some of the packs have been larger then 100 of the crabs.

A few of the supplies for the hermit crab cage is pretty common like the food and water dishes. Another great item about the crab is the food. It is believed that if you can eat it so can the crab. Keep in mind if it is good for you, then good for the crab and if bad for you, like fatty foods and a lot of sweets, it is bad for the crab too. You can of course purchase hermit crab food in the pet stores, but they also eat what we eat.

Another simple item is something for the crabs to climb on. A piece of driftwood works great but remember they do climb and will climb right out of the cage if it is not covered. They also like to dig for several different reasons. If the cage becomes too hot or clod they will dig and create a more comfortable environment of their selves. Also digging might be a sign the crab is starting to molt. This is part of the growing process and it is important for them to have several different sizes of hermit crab shells to change into as they grow.

The good material for the bottom of the cage is half sand and half forest bedding. The sand can be purchased from your local home improvement store or hardware store. Make sure it is dry, free or insects and does not have a funny smell about it that might indicate it is in some way contaminated. The forest bedding can be purchased from the local pet stores. It may come in a hard brick and need to be soaked in water. Adding salt will help the crab to ingest some of the needed minerals they need to stay healthy. Be sure to follow the manufactures instructions on the side of the bag. Keep in mind just a few of the hermit crab facts can make it easy to take care of your new pets.

Well that will depend on what kind of crabs you have. Also where you keep them.
